Everyone's advice is that you should know the market value
of your skills and experience. This is easier said than done.
Many surveys are superficial, or don't break out figures by
critical criteria, e.g., up-to-date job titles, geographical
region, size of company, industry, experience level, so it's
often a process of piecing together information at best. Try
the following as starting points only.
Abbott, Langer & Associates -
Salary and Benefits Survey Reports
Over 450 benchmark jobs in information technology,
marketing/sales, accounting, engineering, human resources,
consulting, manufacturing, nonprofit, legal, and other fields
from over 7,000 participating organizations.
America's Career InfoNet - Wages and Trends
It takes a few clicks to get to the wage information, but it's
worth getting in the form of an "occupation report" with
job details, wage comparisons and links to national and
state trends.
JobStar Central - Salary Information
In addition to linking to over 300 salary surveys, this site
hosts articles and good advice on everything you should know
about salary surveys and negotiation strategies.
Salary.com
Use the fast and easy salary wizard to select a job category
and location which results in a chart showing base, median,
and top earnings for figure out benefits, stock options,
bonuses, as well as negotiation strategies.

Nicely annotated list of salary resources including a salary
negotiation tutorial - a "how-to" guide to all aspects of salary
negotiation, from planning beforehand, to negotiating at the
interview, to tools for helping decide between offers.
Wageweb
Targeted towards HR professionals, Wageweb surveys about
170 benchmark positions in human resources, finance,
engineering, sales/marketing, administrative, information
management, healthcare, and manufacturing. Compensation
data is based upon location, industry, or size of organization.
WSJ.com CareerJournal - Salary Data and
Hiring Trends
CareerJournal, like Salary.com, features a salary report
generator for hundreds of job titles, along with a salary
calculator that compares the same job in various locations,
with hiring trends that can be searched by industry and job
function. There are also articles under topics like "Career
Indicators," "Hot Issues," "Options," and "Regional News,"
which are not dated. Sometimes you can make a good guess
if dates are mentioned within the articles, but this is an
unfortunate omission.
